About

The School
The Bagamoyo Sculpture School offers a unique education and training in both traditional African techniques as well as modern art. We offer lessons in various artistic outlets including wood carving, clay sculpting, casting, and drawing. Though the main focus is on traditional materials such as African hardwood and clay, students have the opportunity to pursue additional interests such as jewelry making and painting. The school seeks to develop the ability of the students to create artistic products which can be recognized as pieces of art rather than souvenirs.

Experienced local teachers, Makonde tribal carvers, former students, and guest lecturers from within Tanzania and outside the country assist in teaching. We offer English courses for local students and Kiswahili courses for foreign students. The school can arrange extra workshops to meet an individual student’s requests.
